An urban forest management plan is an essential part of any community’s toolkit. The UFMP should be supportive of ecological protection and conservation while encouraging proper and sustainable public access and long-term stewardship. Management actions and priority areas for management are determined from intensive surveying of the forest and an analysis of current and historical use of the site. From these, short and long-term objectives can be determined and a timeline created for meeting the established objectives. Although an intensive process, designing official management plans as the standard for urban forest management will go a long way towards more rigorously protecting urban ecosystems.
